Right Foot Pain

rightfoot.jpgAfter my Sunday run, I noticed that the outside area of my right foot was a bit sore and it lasted throughout the rest of the day. There was no swelling and I didn’t think much of it. By the following morning, it felt fine. Monday was a rest day.

Yesterday I went out planning to run 7-8 miles, but after just 2.5 miles, the same area started to hurt. It got so bad that I had to abandon the run. Not only could I not run, but I couldn’t walk without a limp.

When I got home, I started feeling the area to see if I can tell where the pain was coming from. I’ve circled the area on the image to the right. The area wasn’t painful when I poked it, but I could feel a dull pain. It only hurts when I actually stand, walk, or put any kind of pressure on my foot.

Luckily, I had a Dr’s appt yesterday morning as I was planning to get a blood test done to ensure I wasn’t anemic. I had them also take a x-ray so I can confirm I don’t have a stress fracture. Unfortunately I wouldn’t know the results until the end of the week.

I decided to rest today and while my foot feels a bit better, I can still feel a dull pain when I stand or walk.

I think it’s unusual to have a stress fracture in this spot. That’s the good news. Also, if you just did it, the xrays won’t show a stress fracture until it starts to heel.

More likely it’s a strain in one of the peronial tendons.

They are connected to the bone where you’ve marked the pain. They run from there, behind your ankle bone and up to the outside of your knee. I know this injury well.

The root cause of it is probably tightness on the outside leg (not the muscle that runs along the outside of your shin, and not your calf, there’s a muscle between these deeper in. You can feel it if you poke around). You use it most when you push off with your foot, more so when you run uphill.

Anyway, you should find someone to talk to, but you’re probably going to have to be off your foot for a week to 10 days. Time to taper?

    Goodluck!

Ugh. Hopefully the Dr. reports back with good news. In the meantime, make sure you rest, ice, and elevate the foot!

Hoping the dul pain was not serious and you’re back on your way to Chicago training/tapering.

Enjoy the excitement of anticipating Chicago! I am.

Hi, I have just started experiencing a similar pain in my left foot on the outside, but a little furthur towards the toes. What did you find out? I will be checking in with a doctor if it continues to hurt.

I ended up resting a couple days and the pain never returned.

It wasn’t a stress fracture or anything serious
