Chicago Marathon 2007 Training: Week 15

Week 15 has been an “ok” week.  I ran another 30 miles.  I’m back from vacation now and the Chicago marathon is drawing close.  I have just 9 weeks left and if you factor in a 3-week taper, that leaves just 6 weeks of training.

My longest run so far has been 18 miles, but I would like to get in two 20-mile runs.  I figure will do 15 miles tomorrow, 17 miles the following Sunday and then 20 miles the Sunday after that. I’ll then run shorter the following 2 Sunday’s and run my last 20-miler 3 weeks before the marathon.

I’ll aim for 35-40 miles per week for the next 6 weeks.

My body still isn’t feeling right and I’m actually doing quite a lot of walking during my training runs.  I’m hoping things improve drastically over the next 2 months.

Sounds like you’re following a sensible plan. A mistake I’ve made more often than I care to admit is trying to run too many long runs before a marathon and also running the LRs too fast. Hope you’re giving yourself enough recovery. What’s your goal time for Chicago? have you run it before?

This is actually going to be my first marathon. My original goal was a sub-4hr marathon, but I’m sure that is very unlikely at this point. I’m going to aim for a sub-4:30hr marathon, but I probably wouldn’t make a decision until a few days before the marathon.

The long runs are critical, but the speed of your long runs is not as critical. Being that this is your first, the goal is to get you prepared for being on your feet for 4 hours and to get your body adapted to that. If you can run it at your marathon pace, great. But, if you can only run the middle 10 or 12 miles at marathon pace, I think that is okay as well. When I did a marathon last year, I ran five 20 mile runs, but never worried too much about marathon pace at all. I did a pace run each week as well, but never longer than 10 miles. I didn’t hit my goal pace, but I still got a better time than I had expected when I started training. I think you will do just fine as long as you give yourself enough rest.
