Chicago Marathon 2007 Training: Week 6 - 1/4 Done

Todays marks the end of my 6th week of training and it’s also means I’m 1/4 of the way through my 24-week training plan.

I bought a new pair of running shoes which I received yesterday. It’s same model New Balance shoes that I’ve been running in recently. I did my 5-mile run today in them and it felt great. My other pair of shoes now has 347 miles on them. I’ll continue to use them, but just for the shorter 5-6 mile runs. I’ll use the new shoes for the longer runs.

Seeing that I’m 1/4 of the way through my training plan, it’s a good time to evaluate how I’m doing and feeling.

For the last 6 weeks, I’ve run 209.4 miles for a total of 34 hrs 40 mins. My longest run was a 14-miler medium-long run…Pftizinger reserves the nomenclature of “long run” for runs 17 miles or longer :-). My weekly mileage is in the table below.

The following charts shows all my runs for the first 6 weeks:

Overall, I’m quite happy with how my body feels. I had a bit of a concern with some knee pains a few weeks ago, but nothing ever materialized out of it and my knee feels great. I think I’m getting used to the 40-mile weeks and I certainly don’t feel as constantly tired as I used to when I ran a couple 40-mile weeks before I started the marathon plan. It’s just as well as from now on, my lowest volume week until I start to taper will be 43 miles!

Nice work, Derek! I’m about trying to get a 40 mile week in this week - it’s my last week before starting the 18 week / 55 mile Pfitz plan.

Actually, if you’re doing the 18-week plan, you should have started *this* week.

Hehe - you had me worried there for a second and I had to go double check the plan and target dates. I’m still on track, as I’m not running Chicago. I’m doing one in west Texas a week after you do Chicago.

Nice road work there! If all systems go well for me, I should be hitting my first 40+ miler in a couple of months. I loved the long run entitlement reserved for runs 17 miles or longer….it means I am going to really have to pound it out there, in order to be worthy! lol..
    Keep up the great work!
