Hooked on 5Ks?

After my last 5K this past Sunday, I decided to sign up for another one this Saturday and I’m contemplating doing a 3rd the next weekend. Seeing how close I am to placing in my age group is a driving factor. I think on a good day (and small enough race :-) ), I have a real chance of placing in the top 3.

After thinking about it, I actually like the 5K distance. It’s short enough that I could go out fast and if I screw up, I only have to suffer for less than 30 min. With a 10K, I would have to suffer for twice as long. I think the recovery from a 5K should also be shorter and a taper probably not necessary so it would be less disruptive to my weekly mileage than a longer race.

I’m also trying to fit in extra 5K races before I start my marathon training plan on April 22.

Like my last 5K, my plan is to go out at an 8 min/mile pace and try to hold that for as long as I can. If I can hold it for the entire race, I could break 25 mins which would be great!

On the training side, I’m back to running 7 miles/day. I have found a renewed motiviation to continue losing weight so hopefully I can break through my current plateau and make some progress to my goal of 160 lbs.

Wow, your marathon training begins a full month before mine!

I’m stuck with 5K’s in the Florida heat (Maybe an 8K now and then) so I don’t have a choice. I like the longer distances myself, but the 5K’s act as a good “gauge” for progress.

7 a day is awesome. I can’t wait to get to that level! Good job man…

Hi Derek, Thanks for the tip about “The Stick”. I am currently using the the Homedics massager:

which I received as a gift. It works pretty good.

Good luck on your 5K tomorrow!

5K’s are fun but not too taxing on the body
