First Doctor’s Visit Scheduled!

My injury woes have had me rather down in the New Year.  I managed to eck out a 3.2-mile run today, but with some discomfort.

I decided to go see a Sports Medicine specialist.  I have an appointment on Thursday morning.  I had been reluctant to see a doctor as I didn’t want him/her to tell me to stop running.  I guess ignorance was bliss.

It’s at the point now though that my self-treatment isn’t working so I need some professional advice.  I’m hoping it’s something simple that can be cured with new shoes, orthortics, or some simple exercises and that I wouldn’t have to stop running for days or weeks on end.

I remarked to my wife how my 3-mile run was so easy today.  When I was done, I felt as though I had just gone for a short stroll.  I wasn’t out of breath and my legs weren’t tired.  This despite the fact that I managed to log my fast average pace ever for the run at 9:18 min/mile over the 3.2 miles.

Hey Derek - I discovered your blog via RunningAhead when I was browsing around. It was good to read about your fitness/health turnaround and your quest for Boston — that’s awesome. Keep it up and don’t give up, even when it gets really hard (and it will). I was in a similar boat when I decided to train for & run a marathon late 2005.

Just wanted to drop a quick note about this particular post — take injuries (and more importantly injury recovery) very seriously!! I learned the hard way about this — I continued running after I initially suffered a hip stress fracture (but didn’t know it and didn’t get it properly diagnosed until 4 months later). Net result was that I was out about *7* months TOTAL because I kept re-aggravating the injury by running here and there and never let it healed completely. It totally wiped out my 2006 running season. If I had taken the initial time to recover properly, I probably would’ve lost only 3 months.

It’s much better to lose a couple of weeks, or even a month or so of running, then to lose 4-6 months. I know it’s hard, once you have the running/marathon bug, but it’s better to show up at the marathon a little undertrained then to not show up at all because of injury.

Not sure what your specific injuries are (knees?), but definitely get it checked out definitively. Didn’t want to alarm you or anything, but just wanted to share a past experience. Good luck and keep the faith!

Feel free to email me with any questions if you want, or check out my blog. Cheers.

Yes, it’s my knees (both legs) and a little IT band problem on my left leg that I’m dealing with. From what I can tell, I seem to be able to run 3-4 miles at a time, but if I try to go further, it gets worse. It’s strange as prior to this, I did 4 10-mile long runs over 4 consecutive Sundays and they were all fine.

I’m really hoping that once I see the doctor, it turns out to be something very easy to fix. E.g, change shoes or get orthotics.
